This trainee showcase is where the concept of a new JYP boy group began, with the lineup for the group at this time consisting of Chris, Hyunjin, Jisung, Jeongin, Siwon, Yao Chen, and Allen. Performing in front of an audience, the trainees did both group and solo performances, and the audience would get to place a sticker to vote which trainees had the best vocal, best dance, and who had star potential.
Sometime after Seo Changbin joins JYP Entertainment, he and trainees Chris and Jisung form a hip-hop group called 3RACHA (in Korean, pronounced as sseu-racha, like the hot sauce).
Using the names CB97 (Chris), SPEARB (Changbin), and J.ONE (Jisung), 3RACHA released their first mixtape on Soundcloud and YouTube. They also announced on the Korean forum HIPHOPLE that they would be releasing a mixtape every two weeks, with an original track and a cover of an existing sample. In the rest of 2017, the trio would drop several mixtapes on Soundcloud and YouTube.
During this trainee showcase, Woojin and Changbin were officially added to the boy group lineup.
JYP Entertainment announces the name of their boy group survival show: Stray Kids. Unlike their previous successful survival show Sixteen which debuted girl group Twice, the trainees are all pre-selected by longtime trainee Bang Chan and CEO Park Jin-Young and the group competes together to debut.
At this point, Siwon, Yao Chen, and Allen left the lineup. Felix, Minho, and Seungmin joined the company, thus creating the final lineup that would be featured on the survival show.
Before the survival show airs, JYP releases the music video for “Hellevator,” which the group created as their first mission for the show.
In this first episode, viewers get a look at the previously never aired JYP trainee showcase, where they get to see the “HOMECOMING” showcase from a couple months prior. J.Y. Park has the girl group and boy group compete to determine the new debuting group, and he ends up picking the boy group.
After performing self-composed unit songs in previous episodes, J.Y. Park eliminates Minho from the show for lacking some skills due to his shorter training period.
After a busking challenge, Felix is eliminated for struggling with his rap due to his difficulty with the Korean language.
Felix and Minho are given a second chance, and so the group will perform both as a seven-member and nine-member group to determine which lineup will debut. The audience votes with 96% in favor of the nine-member lineup, and so J.Y. Park confirms that all nine members will debut as Stray Kids.
The release featured all seven self-composed tracks created and performed by the members during the show.
